The choir is always eager to attract new singers across the range of voices. We currently have members from over 10 nationalities, spanning 6 decades in age, and welcome newcomers from all backgrounds and languages who can show an ability to sing and willingness to practise and learn. Check out some videos/recordings from our concerts – Goethe Choir on YouTube. Or see a workshop with composer Will Todd!

Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7.30 to 9.45 pm at the Lutherhaus, 24 Adelaide Road, Dublin 2, opposite the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital. This is easily reached from the city centre, close to LUAS and bus stops and has free on-street parking available after 7 pm. Members are expected to commit to regular attendance and extra rehearsals may be added coming up to a performance.

Works in English, Irish, Latin, Italian, German and French have been in the repertoire from the beginning and in recent years we have added Polish, Basque, Welsh and others to the mix, in addition to some medieval or regional dialects and the non-language of Karl Jenkins. When possible we prefer to sing works in their original language and a glance through the repertoire will indicate our special affinity for the works of the great German and Austrian composers but we have plenty of willing language coaches for those who need help.

The annual fee is €170 or €85 for full-time students and  only €30 for anybody under 30 years of age. Sheet music and scores are provided at as low a cost as is feasible and learning aids are shared from the internet or made available by the musical director.

Singers interested in joining us are invited to sing with the choir during rehearsal and will be auditioned by our musical director John Dexter after the rehearsal ends. No preparation is required but candidates will be asked to sing some scales and arpeggios etc. and to repeat short phrases played on the piano. Some ability to read music and to sight sing is an advantage

Choir Development

While concentrating on learning new works and perfecting them for performance, we aim to improve and develop singers’ musical competence by holding occasional training sessions and workshops with John Dexter, often in conjunction with other musical experts such as Virginia Kerr, Sharon Carty or Christoph Wolff. These are held on a Saturday and are not only beneficial for tone, pitch and musicality but are also a great opportunity to get to know one another better and are always a lot of fun.
