Visit to northern Germany – July 2022

For our first trip abroad since 2018, nineteen members of the choir plus a number of partners flew to Hamburg on July 9, 2022 for a visit to northern Germany, along with our guest conductor for the trip, David Leigh.  The culmination of our visit was a stay in Loccum Abbey in Lower Saxony, where Corinna and Joachim Diestelkamp are the church pastors.  Corinna and Joachim are former pastors in St. Finian’s Lutheran church in Dublin, and while there were members of the Goethe Choir.  Since returning to Germany they have instigated the practice of singing a cantata by JS Bach during one of the morning services each summer, and the Goethe Choir was delighted to be invited to take part this year.

The trip lasted from July 9 to 18 and we stayed in three locations – Zarpen (near Lübeck), Stade (near Hamburg) and Loccum.  As well as singing during the service in Loccum on Sunday, July 17 we also performed a specially prepared programme of European music in concerts of our own in the churches of Hamberge, Gnarrenburg, Groß Berkel and finally in Loccum Abbey church, as well as singing during the Sunday morning service in Zarpen on July 10 and after the midday prayer service in St. Michael’s Church (the Michel) in Hamburg on July 12.  We also had plenty of opportunity for sight-seeing in the area, including visits to Lübeck and Hamelin.

You can see a selection of photos from the trip below, followed by some videos of us performing in concerts during the visit.  Hover the cursor over a photo for some info and click on the photo to enlarge it.  More information on the photos is available by clicking on the ‘i’ button below an enlarged photo.

Choir walk – May 2021

After being unable to meet for 5 months due to Covid restrictions, a few of us were delighted to be able to get together again on May 16th 2021 – this time not to sing, but just to enjoy a gentle walk in the hills of south County Dublin, following the first section of the Dublin Mountains Way.  As well as enjoying the company, we were also able to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather which stayed with us all day.

Starting at the entrance to Rathmichael Woods in Shankill, our route took us to the Lead Mines chimney (with a detour on the way to visit the 12th century ruins of the old Rathmichael Church) and on to Barnaslingan Woods where we stopped for lunch overlooking the Scalp, with wonderful views to the Wicklow mountains.  Continuing on the Dublin Mountains Way we then went through the grounds of the old Dublin Sports Hotel (now an abandoned development site), passing the Ski Club of Ireland ski slope and on towards Ballybetagh, before turning back and following an old mass path which led us back to Barnaslingan.  Then onwards to climb Carrickgolligan hill before returning to our start point via Quarry Road.

Christmas concert 2019 – Bach at the National Concert Hall

The choir once again held its annual Christmas concert at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Dec 16th and performed to a large and enthusiastic audience.  This year we performed parts 2,5 and 6 of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, completing the performance which was begun with the other 3 parts in the 2018 Christmas concert.  Here are some photos from the rehearsal and the concert.

Tag der deutschen Einheit – German Unity Day – 2019

The choir was delighted to be invited to sing the German, Irish and European anthems (Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’) at the residence of the German Ambassador to Ireland in Dublin on Friday, Oct 4th at a function to celebrate German Unity Day (Tag der deutschen Einheit) for 2019.   Due to space restrictions, only a section of the choir was able to be accommodated – here are some photos of those who participated.

Glencree Service of Remembrance, Nov 18 2018

The choir was honoured to be invited to take part in the German Remembrance Day service at Glencree Peace & Reconciliation Centre on Sunday November 18th, 2018.  The commemorations involved an ecumenical service at St. Kevin’s Chapel, during which the choir sang a number of items, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Military Cemetery.   Some photos of the occasion appear below – click on any of the thumbnails in order to enlarge the photo.
